On the Military Occupation of Palestine
I found this in a "friend's" blog over at SnardFarker.Ning.com

By the Media Education Foundation ...
... this reminded me of Bill Moyers' "Is the Fourth Estate a Fifth Column?". And also of Harvey Arden. (I guess he's best know for his work on behalf of Leonard Peltier, but I connected with him through his National Geographic work in Afghanistan ... Masood.)

The manipulation of the US media is pretty clear, although I don't think it's much of a tough sell given the level of racism and xenophobia which has always characterized the American public. It's like selling crosses to the Klan, you can't just blame the low prices on lumber.

What I question though (and I mean 'question' in the curiosity sense) is why the 'Arab world' doesn't use it's own vast resources and political influence to make headway against the PR campaign in this country. Couldn't the governments and people of those wealthy nations also help the Palestinians out? Couldn't Dubai's palatial new skyscrapers be built by teams of Palestinians rather than Indians?

I don't really know enough about it, and I'm not even finished watching this docu but wouldn't it be possible for the countries surrounding Israel (who sort of started the war in the first place - at least that's what I've been led to believe) to absorb the Palestinian population, and, in the name of peace, leave those famous patches of desert and sacred ruins to stand alone - a no-man's land which Israel dare not settle.

At this point, my feeling is that just because Israel's occupation is horribly wrong doesn't mean that all who oppose it are justifiably right. Maybe that area of the world should be declared a permanent war zone where stubborn religious people can murder each other with impunity forever...that seems to be what a lot of people are really looking for.

"you can't just blame the low prices on lumber."
heh

"Couldn't the governments and people of those wealthy nations also help the Palestinians out?"
That's not simple.
For one thing: there's money going into the place.
But the bigger thing, I'd say, is that it'd be them bailing out the colonialists ... another form of paternalism ... doesn't establish a good dynamic, know what I mean?

"Couldn't Dubai's palatial new skyscrapers be built by teams of Palestinians rather than Indians?"
If a Palestinian wanted to, couldn't he?
Assuming that the guy would want to ... or had somehow acquired the certifications.

"to absorb the Palestinian population, and, in the name of peace, leave those famous patches of desert and sacred ruins to stand alone"
The snag is, those folk don't want to be absorbed.

"just because Israel's occupation is horribly wrong doesn't mean that all who oppose it are justifiably right."
Ooooh good one.
We can generalize that.

Fucked up situations are exploited by the schemers ... the psychopaths with clean hands and expensive suits, and their thugs.

"that seems to be what a lot of people are really looking for."
Sure ... the poor will always be with us.

But running sores eventually lead to worse disease.

cheers
